What Is bruxism?

Bruxism is nighttime teeth grinding or clenching that can cause tooth damage, headaches, pain, and jaw disorders. The clenching is due to overactive muscles that forcefully contract at night. These contractions cause the teeth to grind against each other at high pressures. The traditional treatment of bruxism is a dental guard that is worn at night. This prevents the teeth from touching so they cannot grind against one another. While this may be effective for some patients, it does not correct the underlying problem, which is the contracting muscles.

How does Botox for grinding teeth work in Charlotte?

Botox for bruxism is a relatively new treatment available at Carolina Facial Plastics. This treatment corrects the contracting muscles, relaxing them to relieve the clenching and grinding. Botox is injected into two of the main muscles that cause the grinding, the masseter, and temporalis muscle. Botox does not affect the patient’s ability to eat, chew, or talk. Most patients experience a resolution of most, if not all, of their symptoms within a week or two after the injections. This procedure is effective for 4-6 months. This five-minute procedure can prevent unwanted teeth clenching, allow for better sleep quality, prevent further damage to their teeth, stop headaches and pain, and improve the patient’s quality of life.

How does Botox help lessen grinding teeth at night?

Because teeth grinding occurs due to a clenched jaw muscle, Botox helps lessen the muscle’s ability to clench tightly. When the muscle relaxes, it results in decreased grinding and relief from accompanying symptoms.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate?

You’re most likely a candidate for the treatment if you grind your teeth at night. Pregnant women cannot have Botox injections.

What is the cost of Botox for teeth grinding?

Cost is dependent upon the individual, as the extent of your teeth grinding will play a part in determining how many injections you’ll need. Carolina Facial Plastics works with our patients to provide a cost-effective treatment plan.

Who should perform Botox injections?

An experienced Botox injector should perform this treatment to ensure the best possible result. Our injectors bring a unique knowledge of both function and aesthetics to our patients. We have extensive training and experience working with neuromodulators like Botox to ensure an optimal outcome for all of their patients.

Where is Botox injected?

When Botox is used to treat bruxism, it is injected into the masseter muscles located in the jaw and the temporalis muscle in the scalp. By relaxing the muscles involved with the clenching action, we can reduce the amount of grinding that you’ll be able to do while sleeping.
