Remarkable Care, Exceptional Results

“I was tired of being told I looked tired due to the bags under my eyes. I would hide behind my glasses because I was so embarrassed. Pros for blepharoplasty is the speedy recovery and very little pain. Con the brow lift recovery was not as fast as blepharoplasty. I’m still healing from 4 months later however it doesn’t keep me from doing anything just a little tender at the incision points. I’d do it again!”

What is the ideal aesthetic of the lower eyelid?

The eyes are the most important facial feature as they relay the majority of our non-verbal communication. The shape of the eye and the surrounding facial features will show a gamut of emotions, including joy, sadness, worry, or fatigue. The contour and structure of the lower eyelid create an eye shape that appears open and awake. A smooth area that seamlessly transitions from the lower eyelashes to the cheek area is ideal. However, this transition can be interrupted over time by hollowing, puffiness, or wrinkles that age the eye and overall appearance. Eyelid surgery reverses these changes to create a refreshed, more youthful appearance.

What are the changes that happen to the lower eyelid with aging?

Over time, we lose the smooth transition from the eyelashes to the cheek.

This change occurs because:

  • Sun exposure damages the lower eyelid skin
  • Fat herniated from behind the eye creates bags
  • Loss of volume forms in the cheek
  • Sagging begins in the cheek tissue

These changes can develop wrinkles, bags, or dark circles underneath the eye that will create a sad or tired eye that makes people self-conscious about their appearance and prompts them to seek eyelid treatment.

What is lower eyelid blepharoplasty in Charlotte?

Lower blepharoplasty is an eyelid surgery that creates a smoother transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek. There are many technical variations Dr. Kulbersh might use during a lower blepharoplasty to customize the eyelid procedure.

The following are the steps taken for each concern:

The loose or wrinkled skin of the lower eyelid

A variety of modalities can address the aging skin. The excess skin can be removed by making a small incision underneath the eyelashes. If the skin has begun to thin, a chemical peel or laser resurfacing treatment can stimulate collagen production and rejuvenate the epidermis.

Excess puffiness or bags under the eyes

Excess fat that herniates from behind the eye may lead to puffiness in the lower lid. Dr. Kulbersh repositions the fat to the cheek area during the procedure. A small incision will be made either under the eyelashes or inside the lower lid so that the scar is well hidden. There are instances where the fat will need to be sculpted or removed. Since the face will lose volume over time, Dr. Kulbersh will not use aggressive fat removal of the lower lids. This common practice in previous eyelid surgeries results in a hollow appearance years later. Dr. Kulbersh has revamped his technique to create a more long-lasting result.

Loose or sagging eyelid

If the eyelid is drooping, it may need tightening with a canthopexy procedure. A canthopexy creates a firmer, smoother contour to the lower eyelid.

Loss of Volume in the Cheek

If a deflated cheek contributes to the circles underneath the eye, Dr. Kulbersh can use facial fat transferfacial fillers, or a cheek implant to restore volume to the cheek area.

What can I expect from the recovery from a lower blepharoplasty?

The recovery from a lower blepharoplasty will take about 1-2 weeks depending on the individual. During the first week after the eyelid procedure, the patient will experience swelling and bruising. This will peak 48 hours after the surgery. Vision will be a little hazy as the patient will be placing drops and ointment in the eye. There is minimal pain associated with this eyelid treatment, but patients will have narcotic pain medications available. Stitches placed below the eyelids are dissolvable. For fat reposition lower blepharoplasty, the stitches will be removed 1 week after surgery.

For the best treatment and recovery from a lower blepharoplasty procedure, Dr. Kulbersh invites you to schedule your surgery at Fairview Surgical Suites, an exclusive, single-room operating theater dedicated to facial aesthetic surgery, and Fairview Recovery Retreat, a recovery center where you can relax in a stress-free environment surrounded by aftercare professionals. Your Procedure

Dr. Kulbersh will perform your blepharoplasty at the fully accredited Fairview Surgical Suites. Upper or lower blepharoplasty typically takes 1-2 hours to complete and requires local or general anesthesia.

For lower blepharoplasty – Dr. Kulbersh may use various techniques to customize the eyelid procedure, depending on your concerns. Lower eye bags are typically caused by extra fat in the region. This fat is moved into a better position in the cheek area to smooth the region. This technique creates the most natural and long-lasting result. Dr. Kulbersh believe in preserving the fat around the eye. To treat loose, wrinkled skin on the lower eyelid, he makes a small incision underneath the eyelashes and removes excess skin. If there is loss of volume in the cheek that has contributed to under-eye circles, Dr. Kulbersh can use facial fillersfacial fat transfer, or a cheek implant to restore volume to the cheek area.

For upper blepharoplasty – Dr. Kulbersh makes an incision along the upper eyelid’s crease. He either removes pockets of fat in the upper eyelid or repositions it so the area will lay flatter. He also trims excess skin that is hooding the eye. Finally, he closes the incision to reveal a smoother and tauter upper eyelid.
