Whether you have thinning hair, a bald spot, or a receding hairline, Dr. Kulbersh employs a range of hair restoration techniques that offer patients natural-looking results. He has learned from some of the best surgeons and centers in the country, and our team has extensively worked to design a center that will create both great results for hair growth and an exceptional experience for our patients.

Types of Transplants We Offer

The treatment options for hair loss at Carolina Facial Plastics will focus both on maintaining and restoring the hair. We offer Neograft as a surgical technique for hair restoration. This is a type of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – the latest advancement in hair restoration surgery that involves obtaining each follicular unit directly from the scalp and implanting them into a thinning area, such as the hairline or crown, making the hair look thicker.

We also offer non-surgical treatment options that can be used as stand-alone treatments or in conjunction with a surgical procedure. Rogaine®/Minoxidil (topical or oral medication) and Propecia®/Finasteride (a medical pill) slow down the rate of hair loss while encouraging new growth. A device for low-level light therapy and supplements may also be part of the treatment plan. We also offer exosomes and microneedling treatments, PRF, daily supplements and shampoos/conditioners.

Hair Transplants for Men and Women

Both men and women with thinning hair and well-defined baldness can benefit from a hair transplant. Since their hair loss patterns differ, the approach to their hair transplants will also be different.  Hair transplants are designed to give a naturally appearing hairline that will be indistinguishable from the native hair.  The design and approach of the procedure will also account for the age, anticipated rate of future hair loss, and goals of the patients.  The best approach will be determined during a consultation with Dr. Kulbersh or Kathleen Summers.

When Should A Patient Consider a Hair Transplant

During your consultation, Dr. Kulbersh will examine your scalp and ask what your hair goals are. If you have areas that you have lost hair, then you would need to consider a hair transplant. A hair transplant is ideal for a patient whose hair loss is stable. If the patient is young or is continuing to lose hair, then a hair transplant could be an option.  In this circumstance, the patient and Dr. Kulbersh must both have the expectation that the patient may need another hair transplant in the future and the transplant plan will be tailored with this in mind.

Your Hair Transplant Experience at Carolina Facial Plastics

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Kulbersh will examine your scalp and ask what hair restoration treatments (if any) you’ve tried in the past, and the degrees of success you’ve achieved. After examining your scalp and finding out the history and full extent of your hair loss, he will explain the various treatment options, determine how many hair grafts are needed, and recommend the best treatment plan that will give you the most natural-looking results. Some treatment plans may include medical hair growth treatments for 6 months to a year before considering hair transplantation. He may also show you hair transplant before and after photos so that you’ll know what results to expect.

Your Procedure

We strive to foster a comfortable experience during your treatment. You may read a book, listen to music, or bring an audiobook to relax. We also have a TV in the OR that you can watch throughout the procedure. When we break for lunch, we can place an order for you so you don’t have to worry about bringing food. You’re free to get up and stretch your legs, take breaks, and use the restroom.

Step 1: Numbing/Local Anesthesia

Neograft procedures use local anesthesia to ensure minimal discomfort during surgery. You will either lie facing down or on your side during surgery.

Step 2: FUE Technique

For the FUE technique, Dr. Kulbersh and his team will harvest hair using small circular incisions that remove individual follicular units one at a time.

Step 3: Transplant

Depending on the number of hair grafts that need to be transplanted and the size of the treatment area, hair transplant surgery can take between 4-8 hours and may require 1-2 sessions.

Step 4: Recovery

A few simple tips to ensure a smooth recovery:

  • Avoid touching the transplanted area
  • Do not drive
  • Feel free to eat what you want (no dietary restrictions)
  • Prepare for some oozing from the donor area on the back of head
  • Start spraying grafted areas with saline solution
  • Sleep with your head elevated position for the first 3 nights following the procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

Hair transplant surgery is normally a safe procedure when performed by a qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Still, all types of surgery carry some degree of risk. Possible complications of hair transplant surgery include:

  • Adverse reactions to anesthesia
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Inflammation of the hair follicles (pain, swelling, and itching of the scalp)
  • Visible scarring
  • Nerve damage
  • Tissue death

The average cost of a hair transplant is between $8,000-$18,000 for FUE/Neograft.

Factors affecting the cost and price of hair transplants include:

  • Your degree of baldness
  • The number of grafts you’ll need
  • Hair transplant technique
  • The required number of sessions (those needing 5,000 grafts or higher will need to return for an additional session)
  • Availability of donor grafts
  • The surgeon’s expertise

Men and women who have been balding for many years, whose pattern hair loss has stabilized, and who desire to have thicker hair for a more youthful-looking appearance may be ideal candidates for a hair transplant. Those who have lost hair due to injury, trauma, or burns and those who have lost hair due to cosmetic procedures such as facelifts may also benefit from the procedure. Potential candidates must have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head to serve as donor sites.

A consultation with Dr. Kulbersh is the best way to determine one’s eligibility for a hair transplant.

Neograft works best on patients who:

  • Have had no previous hair transplant procedures
  • Are not allergic to Lidocaine, Epinephrine, or Valium/Xanax
  • Are not on any blood thinner medications
  • Have thick/dense hair at donor site

Hair transplantation is performed under local anesthesia, so there is only minimal discomfort during the procedure. Since patient comfort is our top priority, we will make sure you are relaxed during the procedure.  We also utilize Pro-Nox, which is a type of laughing gas to help ease discomfort or nervousness, along with oral medications to help you relax during the procedure.

Generally, patients obtain final hair transplant results between six and nine months after their hair transplant surgery. For some patients, it takes a year.

If you’re unhappy with your hair transplant results, transplanted hair grafts can be removed and placed in another area or to correct the mistakes of your previous surgeon.

No. Hair transplants are considered cosmetic procedures and will not be covered by insurance.

Since donor hair follicles preserve their characteristics and enable healthy hair growth, the results of a hair transplant are visibly long-lasting and are considered permanent.   Hair loss is progressive and will continue if patients do not take care of their native hair.  It is important for patients to continue non-surgical treatments after a hair transplant to maintain a stellar result.

The procedure itself takes 1-2 days, and recovery can take up to 7 days. You might need to take a week off from work for the procedure.

If you are experiencing pain, discomfort, or other complications associated with hair transplant surgery during and after the expected recovery process, or if your side effects are becoming progressively worse, contact your surgeon to receive the appropriate treatment.

If you have any acute problems after your hair transplant that need urgent attention, they should occur within the first week. Otherwise, any problem that develops over time would be minor and require less immediate attention, and Dr. Kulbersh can initially address it through a tele-consult. If you require an urgent medical visit, he may contact or recommend a colleague in your vicinity to have you evaluated.

Yes, FUE/NeoGraft is a viable option for both men and women who seek to restore their own natural and growing hair through transplantation. Since it is a minimally-invasive procedure, it is suitable for both genders.
