PRP, otherwise known as platelet rich plasma, is a well-studied and documented serum that has been used for injections to promote healing for years. It is well-known in the orthopedic community as it has been injected into joints to successfully promote healing. One use of PRP used at Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte is combining it with micro-needling treatments to improve the health and quality of the facial skin.

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. Platelets are a component of blood that are best known to help promote clotting, but they have many other functions in the body. Platelets are responsible for stimulating the body to heal at the site of an injury or trauma. When a platelet enters an area of injury, it releases the growth factors, and cytokines stimulate the body to create new collagen, stimulate cell growth, and accelerate the healing process.

PRP is created by using the patient’s own blood. In our office, we will draw a small amount of blood from the patient. That blood goes through a process of centrifugation, or spinning, that will separate the platelets from the other blood components. After we concentrate the platelets, the one solution that is created is called platelet rich plasma or PRP.

Adding PRP to a micro-needling treatment will greatly enhance the overall results of the micro-needling. Adding PRP to micro-needling will further stimulate collagen, tighten skin, reduce pore size, and smooth wrinkles. Micro-needling combined with PRP will cause a profound improvement to the facial skin. Adding PRP to micro-needling is like adding horsepower to a race car.

After the PRP is created, it is placed on the face, and the micro-needling treatment is performed. Micro-needling creates small channels and injuries to the facial and neck skin that the platelet rich plasma penetrates. As these platelets penetrate these areas of injuries, they will become activated. Activated platelets will release growth factors and cytokines that will stimulate cell growth, collagen production, and healing of the skin. This addition of your natural healing factors during micro-needling is the responsible step in the enhancement of the micro-needling treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Micro-needling with PRP is very well tolerated. We use a variety of numbing creams and solutions to ensure that the patient is comfortable. There is minor discomfort during this procedure.

Micro-needling with PRP is a minimally invasive procedure designed to minimize downtime. Immediately after the treatment, the patient will be red and blotchy. Most people will be able to wear makeup the next day and return to normal activities. If patients are seeking a more dramatic result and are willing to take 1 to 2 days of downtime, the aggressiveness of the procedure can be increased. By the same token, if resumption of normal activities in a short time is preferable, a less aggressive treatment can be used to ensure rapid recovery. It is important to relay your desires to our staff to ensure we meet your needs and expectations.

This depends on the health and quality of skin of the patient and their ultimate goals. In patients who have relatively good skin with minimal wrinkles, they may require 2-3 treatments. If patients have significant damage and an aged appearance of their skin or their goals are to get the best result possible, they may require up to six treatments. Most patients will need 3 to 6 treatments to obtain their desired result.

We recommend having these treatments every 2 to 3 weeks. This spacing will allow an additive effect of the treatments and enhance the overall results. It typically takes 8 to 12 weeks after the last treatment to see the final results. After results have been achieved, we recommend additional treatments every 4 to 6 months to maintain the quality and health of the skin.
