Skin quality diminishes over time due to UV exposure, medical conditions, and repeated facial movements. This can result in uneven pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and skin laxity. There are numerous products and treatments available to improve skin quality. One of the most effective and powerful treatment methods is laser resurfacing.
A laser uses energy to remove the aging outer skin and allow new, healthy skin to replace it. To learn more about laser resurfacing and other rejuvenating treatments offered at Carolina Facial Plastics, please contact our center today.

We will assess your skin and discuss your concerns and goals at your initial consultation. Through this appointment, we can create a treatment plan tailored precisely to your needs for the best possible outcome.
We perform laser resurfacing in our office on an outpatient basis. Patients are given medications to take approximately one hour before the procedure to help them relax and minimize potential discomfort. When patients arrive at our office, the face will be thoroughly cleansed, and a topical numbing cream will be applied. After the face is numbed with a topical cream, we will administer additional numbing injections to ensure patient comfort.
After the patient is numbed and relaxed, the treatment begins and takes anywhere from 30-90 minutes to complete. The exact length of time depends on the area treated, the extent of the skin damage, and the laser settings.
At Carolina Facial Plastics, we employ three different laser resurfacing procedures from a single platform. Your treatment is chosen based on your concerns, anatomy, and goals. We use an erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser made by Cutera called the Pearl. We chose an erbium laser because it is as effective but with significantly less risk of complications than a CO2 laser. There are three types of Pearl laser resurfacing treatments performed at our practice:
Pearl resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment that treats the entire superficial layer of the skin. This procedure addresses pigment and texture issues. It is less effective for skin tightening and treating fine lines.
Pearl fractional is a fractionated laser treatment. During this procedure, the laser makes microscopic holes that go deeper into the dermal layers than the Pearl resurfacing treatment. This deeper treatment is better at treating fine lines, acne scars, and loose skin.
Pearl fusion is a combination of both Pearl resurfacing and Pearl fractional laser treatments. This procedure is appropriate for a wide range of skin concerns.
Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, the downtime after a Pearl laser will be 7-10 days. Immediately after the treatment, the face will be red and covered with a light layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor. If the deeper Pearl fractional laser is used, there will likely be some minor oozing during the healing process. During this time, the face will feel tight and itchy but not painful. We give all patients detailed post-treatment instructions that include washing and soaking the skin. Bright, beautiful, and healthy skin will appear 10-14 days after the procedure, and the skin will continue to improve for the next four months.
Our office also offers exosome therapy to accelerate post-treatment healing. Applying exosomes directly to the skin after treatment has been shown to significantly reduce redness and speed up recovery times. Many patients experience a visible reduction in redness within 24 hours after post-laser exosome therapy compared to 48-72 hours. Exosomes also contain growth factors that help stimulate collagen and reduce the appearance of pigmentation from sun damage.

Frequently asked questions
To have the best result and ensure a safe treatment, we have created a six-week treatment plan for patients to undergo before having a laser resurfacing treatment. This plan allows the patient to heal faster and decreases the risk of potential complications. The treatment plan may include but is not limited to a medical-grade facial wash, retin-A, skin lightening cream, and a chemical peel.
All patients will experience significant improvement in their skin after a single treatment. If patients have advanced stages of aging or deep facial wrinkles, they may require an additional treatment session to achieve the best results.
Patients that have been on Accutane within the last year or have vitiligo or active facial infection are not candidates for laser facial resurfacing. The procedure is not recommended for patients with darker complexions as these skin tones have a higher risk for pigmentation irregularities and other complications.
At Carolina Facial Plastics, we take many steps to ensure patient comfort throughout a laser skin resurfacing procedure. However, each patient is unique, and some patients may experience mild stinging and slight discomfort. Overall, this procedure is tolerated well.
