Septoplasty

  • A septoplasty procedure corrects a deviated septum, the bony structure within your nose that separates your nostrils. When the septum deviates to either side, your breathing is affected. Depending on the angle of deviation, you can experience a range of difficulties breathing in and out, which can eventually lead to fatigue, difficulty sleeping, snoring, and chronic sinus conditions. Fortunately, at Carolina Facial Plastics, Dr. Kulbersh offers nasal obstruction surgery (a treatment commonly known as “septoplasty”) to repair your septum.

“I chose Dr Kulbersh for a rather complicated septoplasty and rhinoplasty. Dr. Kulbersh and his staff were very thorough in answering my questions prior to surgery and I could not be happier with the results. He and his staff are extremely professional and compassionate. I believe we are very fortunate to have such a brilliant and talented surgeon here in Charlotte and I highly recommend Carolina Facial Plastics.”

Why would I need a septoplasty?

You may need a septoplasty for a variety of reasons. Some individuals are born with a slightly deviated septum and can opt for a repair procedure once their nose is fully mature. A deviation can occur after an injury or trauma to the nose as well. Injury can also cause nasal septal perforation or a collapsing nose, both of which may need to be corrected with a rhinoplasty. Bony spur formations and narrow valves are also reasons to opt for nasal obstruction surgery.

What can I expect from my septoplasty in Charlotte?

Each septoplasty procedure will differ according to the nasal obstruction issues facing each patient. Dr. Kulbersh is a specialist in nasal and facial reconstruction surgery, completing his fellowship in facial reconstruction and a five-year residency as an ENT. He performs a thorough examination of your nose and tailors your procedure to suit your case. In deviated septum cases, Dr. Kulbersh works to recenter the septum and strengthen these structures if needed.

A septoplasty or other nasal reconstruction procedure can be complex. Depending on the degree of correction required, patients may experience different recovery times. Dr. Kulbersh will examine your nose and discuss your needs and expectations for surgery with you. Typically, a septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Kulbersh will let you know how long the surgery might take and the amount of time you will need to allow for recovery. The timeframe can range from 4-14 days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the septum?

The septum consists of bone and cartilage in the center of the nasal cavity to separate the left and right passages.

What are the causes of a deviated septum?

A deviated septum commonly occurs during the development of the nose during the childhood years. It can also be due to trauma, although this is not as typical.

Will the surgery change the appearance of my nose?

Septoplasty focuses on the internal structure of the nose and does not impact the appearance. However, you can combine septoplasty with rhinoplasty if you would like to make changes to the nose at the same time corrections are done.

How soon can I resume my workouts?

You will be able to resume full workouts 4-6 weeks after your surgery.
