Temple Augmentation
- A change in the balance and proportion of the face is due to a loss of volume as we age. The loss of fat in the temple region is a primary factor. The temples are commonly augmented or filled to improve facial architecture and create an improved facial aesthetic. At Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, our board-certified nurse practitioner, Courtney Whitley, FNP-C, and physician assistants Heather Bryant, MPAS, PA-C, and Amanda Piligian, PA-C, can help you achieve the look you desire.

Rejuvenate the Temples without Surgery
The shape, balance, and proportion of the face change over time. A younger face tends to have more fullness and width, which gently narrows and angulates to the chin region. This causes the overall facial shape to resemble an upside-down egg or a heart.
Over time, there is a significant change in this overall proportion, as the face will begin to become oval in shape and lose the fullness and width in the upper third of the face.
The top aesthetic destination of the south, Carolina Facial Plastics, is led by double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Kulbersh. With his team of cosmetic experts, a fully accredited surgery center, and a private recovery retreat all located in the heart of SouthPark, Carolina Facial Plastics is known for unparalleled and natural-looking results exclusively for the face.
What are the signs of lost volume in the temples?
During the aging process, the loss of volume in the temples can become very noticeable. Signs that the temples have lost volume include:
- Indentation or concave temples
- Increased visibility of the bone surrounding the eye
- Increased prominence and visualization of the cheekbone
- Narrowing of the upper 1/3 of the head
The temples can be augmented by a variety of techniques at Carolina Facial Plastics:
- Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane or Juvéderm
- The collagen stimulator Sculptra
- Facial fat grafting
The temples can be easily and quickly augmented with either hyaluronic acid fillers or Sculptra right in our office. If a filler like Restylane or Juvéderm is chosen, the results are instantaneous and will last 6-12 months. At Carolina Facial Plastics, these fillers are injected with a blunt-tipped micro-cannula to limit trauma, swelling, and bruising.
Sculptra can also be used to fill the temples. The results of Sculptra are gradual and can take up to 3-5 months to appreciate full results. Sculptra works by stimulating the body to produce collagen. This process is gradual. Sculptra is typically injected every 4 weeks for 2-3 sessions. The results of Sculptra will last approximately two years.
The temples can also be augmented using one’s own fat during a facial fat grafting procedure. During this procedure, fat is harvested from either the stomach or thighs and transplanted to the temple region. The advantage of using one’s own fat is that the results will last for many years, making it cost-effective for many patients. Fat transfer is frequently performed with surgical procedures like a facelift or blepharoplasty.

Recovery is similar regardless of the technique used for temple augmentation. Side effects might include minor swelling and soreness in the region for a few days. Whenever volume is added to the face, there is also some risk of bruising. The use of a blunt-tipped micro-cannula minimizes this risk. During a consultation, you will undergo a full facial evaluation to discuss your precise needs and goals. With this information, our expert injectors can help you determine whether temple augmentation is the right choice for you. Frequently asked questions
What are the causes of a loss of volume in the temples?
There are different causes of volume loss in the temples. During the aging process, it is natural for the temples to lose fat. Hollowing in the temples can also be attributed to intense anaerobic exercise. Additionally, some patients may be genetically predisposed to having a thinner facial shape.
How long does a temple augmentation take?
A temple augmentation is a quick procedure regardless of the technique. The procedure will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Is a temple augmentation painful?
A temple augmentation is well-tolerated by patients. During all office temple augmentation procedures, numbing cream or medicine is used to ensure patient comfort. During facial fat grafting, patients are commonly asleep and feel no discomfort. It is common for patients to have tenderness or soreness in the region for a few days. This pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
How long will the results of temple augmentation last?
The duration of temple augmentation varies from patient to patient. The timeframe depends on the specific procedure you undergo at Carolina Facial Plastics. If hyaluronic-acid based fillers like Restylane or Juvéderm are used, results from your liquid facelift can last well over six months. Sculptra lasts up to two years, and fat transfer can last for many years.
