A lip flip involves precisely injecting a few units of Botox above the upper lip to relax the muscles around the mouth, causing the lip to “flip” and curl outward. This creates a larger, fuller, and plumper upper lip with a more defined shape.
My team of certified injectors at Carolina Facial Plastics, Heather Bryant, MPAS, PA-C, Courtney Whitley, FNP-C, and Amanda Piligian, PA-C, expertly perform the Botox lip flip, helping our Charlotte, NC patients achieve their aesthetic goals through non-surgical treatments that enhance their natural beauty and self-confidence.
I also perform lip lifts, a surgical procedure that permanently reveals more of the upper lip and shortens the area between the nose and lip.
Are you considering getting a lip flip? Here’s a quick guide to this safe, effective, and minimally invasive lip augmentation procedure.
Lip Flip vs. Filler: What is the difference?
Lip fillers are gel-like substances that restore volume, smooth lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. When injected into the lips, fillers augment lip volume, resulting in a fuller, poutier lip.
While lip fillers increase lip size by adding volume, a lip flip will amplify the natural shape by increasing the show of the upper lip without changing its size.
A lip flip will not add volume to lips, but it can be done to accentuate your lip filler results.
The longevity of the results also varies between lip flip vs. filler. It takes up to a week to see lip flip results, while lip fillers show immediate results. The effects of Botox last about 3-4 months. By comparison, lip fillers can last between 6-18 months, depending on the product used and how quickly your body breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the filler.
Who is a good candidate for a lip flip?
Lip flips are an ideal treatment option for patients who:
- Desire to have fuller lips but don’t want lip fillers
- Have an upper lip that “disappears” when they smile
- Have a gummy smile (upper teeth and gums are revealed when smiling)
- Prefer subtle lip enhancement results
- Prefer temporary results
- Would like to experiment with a non-surgical lip enhancement procedure before undergoing more invasive procedures
How long does a lip flip last?
Botox lip flip results last about 3-4 months. We can create a treatment schedule for you to ensure your lip flip improvements continue indefinitely.
What is recovery like?
You may resume your normal activities after your procedure, just as long as you don’t put pressure on your lips for the first day after your injection.
You may experience bruising or notice a small bump at the injection site after your treatment. These side effects, along with any tenderness, swelling, or numbness should resolve within 12-24 hours.
You should begin to see results within a few days with continual improvement for the next several days. You’ll achieve the full results of the lip flip approximately 10-14 days after your procedure.
