3 Reasons Men Are Choosing Rhinoplasty

Women make up most of the plastic surgery patients in the US, but men are steadily becoming a more significant portion of that population. In 2019, men underwent 8% of all cosmetic procedures, which was 1.3 million total. Of these, 211,000 procedures were surgical, and more than 24% of those were rhinoplasties. The stigma surrounding cosmetic procedures is lessening—for women and men—allowing more men to feel at ease booking procedures like rhinoplasties to improve their appearance, nose functionality, and self-confidence.

At Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, NC, I focus exclusively on facial and neck rejuvenation techniques, including rhinoplasties, for women and men. We are the all-inclusive aesthetic destination of the South, and our team includes board-certified physician assistant Heather Bryant, board-certified nurse practitioner Courtney Whitley, and myself, a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon. We work together to provide the latest and best techniques for surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures.

Advancements in technology and surgical technique allow facial plastic surgeons to provide the best and most natural-looking results for men seeking rhinoplasties. Rhinoplasty was the top plastic surgery procedure for men in 2019 by far, maintaining its lead from 2018. Men choose rhinoplasty for a variety of reasons, and I can help each patient at my Charlotte, NC office achieve their unique aesthetic goals with this procedure. Below, I explain three of the most common reasons men choose rhinoplasty.

1. Create A More Masculine Nose

No two noses are the same, and this is true for women and men. Certain features of the nose, however, point to femininity, and others exude masculinity. For most men, a strong and prominent nose is ideal, with very distinctive features. Men seeking rhinoplasty often seek to correct:

  • Nose size – widening the overall shape of the nose
  • Nose tip – adding fullness or straightening so it does not point upward
  • Nasal dorsum (bridge) – strengthening through increased size or by straightening it
  • Dimensions – making the nose less round and more angular

I can accomplish these changes for most noses, but a consultation at our office in the heart of Southpark will give you clear insights into what you can achieve with your rhinoplasty. I also provide one of the most exciting services in cosmetic facial plastic surgery: Image morphing technology. This allows patients to “audition” a new nose with computer-generated “before and after” photographs. Through the simulation, you can see a near estimate of what you could look like after your rhinoplasty, even before your procedure. This technology also serves as a valuable visual and communication tool to ensure you and I are on the same page regarding your procedure.

If you are not ready for a surgical procedure, you may choose a non-surgical rhinoplasty. To know more whether you are a good candidate of non-surgical rhinoplasty, check out this article.  For this procedure, Heather, Courtney, or myself use dermal fillers to add volume to your nose. You may be a good candidate for a temporary rhinoplasty if your nose is:

  • Bumpy
  • Crooked
  • Dented
  • Droopy
  • Upturned
  • Flat or scooped on the bridge
  • Shapeless at tip
  • Wide at tip
  • Pinched at tip

A non-surgical or liquid rhinoplasty is not permanent, but it is a good way to improve your appearance for a special occasion or to see what a surgical rhinoplasty could look like on you.

2. Enhance Overall Appearance Long-Term

The nose is just one feature of your face, but it may be the most important. Due to its central location, it is one of the first parts of the face others notice—especially when they’re seeing you from the side. The nose is also important because it balances your other facial features. For example, if you have a strong chin but a small nose by comparison, your overall face may seem weak. By widening your small nose, your nose and chin can work together to exude strength and confidence. Many men seek chin augmentation along with their rhinoplasty procedure for a more distinct transformation.

One fear among men is that their rhinoplasty will give them a “fake” appearance or that their friends and family will all be able to tell. The goal of any facial cosmetic procedure is to enhance your appearance, not dramatically alter it. I examine each of my patient’s noses and facial structure before creating a treatment plan. I will design your rhinoplasty so your nose will balance out your eyes, mouth, and chin, enhancing all your natural features.

3. Improve Nasal Functions Results after Septoplasty, a nose job that fixes nasal function. Nostrills are more open making breathing easier for the African American male, Charlotte, NC

Many men are not just seeking rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, but also for functionality. We rely on our noses to breathe, and a septoplasty, nose surgery that addresses certain functionality issues, can correct a deviated septum. Deviated septums are sometimes present at birth or can occur from injury to the nose. A septoplasty can improve:

  • Difficulty breathing in and out
  • Fatigue
  • Sleeping
  • Snoring
  • Chronic sinus conditions

During a septoplasty procedure, I work on the inside of the nose, but you may also pair your septoplasty procedure with a rhinoplasty to correct your nose’s outer appearance as well.
