What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic ear surgery designed to correct prominent or protruding ears, ear pinning concerns, or irregular ear shape. It is commonly performed for children with prominent ears as well as adults seeking refinement. The procedure reshapes cartilage to bring the ears into a more natural position while maintaining symmetry. Many patients pursue otoplasty to address pinned ears or ears that project outward.

What Age Is Best for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is often performed in children once the ears are fully developed, typically around age five or older. At this stage, ear cartilage is 80% of the adult size and remains malleable to change.  Early treatment can help prevent social discomfort such as teasing. Adults of any age can also benefit from otoplasty surgery if ear shape or position remains a concern. The ideal timing depends on individual anatomy and personal goals.

Your Consultation

Your consultation includes a detailed evaluation of ear anatomy, facial proportions, and aesthetic goals. This visit ensures otoplasty is planned with precision and clarity.

Your Procedure

Otoplasty surgery is performed using carefully placed incisions, usually hidden behind the ear. The procedure can be done under general anesthesia or awake under local anesthesia. The technique focuses on reshaping cartilage to achieve balanced, natural-looking results.

Aftercare and Recovery

Otoplasty recovery typically involves a protective headband for 1 week and minimal pain. The patient may take a pain pill for one night and quickly transition to Tylenol for the remainder of the recovery. Overall, downtime is short, and patients may resume normalcy 1 week after surgery, following removal of the headband.  Patients will continue to wear a small headband during sleep for 3 weeks after the procedure to ensure optimal healing.

Otoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

How much does otoplasty cost?

Otoplasty cost varies depending on the complexity of the ear surgery and the specific corrections needed. Factors such as surgical technique, facility fees, and anesthesia are considered when determining total cost. During your consultation, a personalized treatment plan is created, so pricing can be reviewed clearly and transparently. This approach helps patients understand the value and scope of their otoplasty surgery.

Will insurance pay for otoplasty?

Insurance generally does not cover cosmetic ear surgery, including otoplasty performed for aesthetic concerns. In rare cases involving significant functional or reconstructive needs, partial coverage may be considered. Our team can review your situation and help determine whether insurance documentation is appropriate. This discussion typically takes place during the consultation process.

How long do otoplasty results last?

Otoplasty results are intended to be long-lasting once healing is complete. The cartilage reshaping performed during otoplasty surgery provides stable, permanent improvement in ear position and shape. Most patients enjoy consistent results throughout adulthood without the need for additional treatment. Proper aftercare during otoplasty recovery supports optimal long-term outcomes.

Can I wear glasses after otoplasty?

Patients who wear glasses can usually resume wearing them 1 week after otoplasty with guidance from their surgeon. Care is taken during recovery to avoid pressure on the ears while healing. In some cases, adjustments or temporary alternatives may be recommended during early otoplasty recovery. These precautions help protect results while maintaining comfort.

Can you bend your ears after otoplasty?

After otoplasty recovery is complete, the ears maintain a natural appearance and flexibility. Normal movement and daily activities do not typically affect results. While the ears are reshaped during cosmetic ear surgery, they are not rigid or unnatural in feel. Patients can expect ears that look and function normally.  Patients should not forcefully bend the ears after an otoplasty for 3 months after surgery to allow for complete healing.

Does otoplasty leave a scar?

Otoplasty surgery is designed to keep scarring minimal and discreet. Incisions are commonly placed behind the ear, where they are well concealed. As healing progresses, scars usually fade and become difficult to notice. Proper wound care during recovery supports optimal scar appearance.

When can I sleep on my side after otoplasty?

Side sleeping is ok after an otoplasty, as patients are wearing a protective headband to prevent injury.
