What Is bruxism?
Bruxism is nighttime teeth grinding or clenching that can cause tooth damage, headaches, pain, and jaw disorders. The clenching is due to overactive muscles that forcefully contract at night. These contractions cause the teeth to grind against each other at high pressures. The traditional treatment of bruxism is a dental guard that is worn at night. This prevents the teeth from touching so they cannot grind against one another. While this may be effective for some patients, it does not correct the underlying problem, which is the contracting muscles.

How does Botox for grinding teeth work in Charlotte?

Botox for bruxism is a relatively new treatment available at Carolina Facial Plastics. This treatment corrects the contracting muscles, relaxing them to relieve the clenching and grinding. Botox is injected into two of the main muscles that cause the grinding, the masseter, and temporalis muscle. Botox does not affect the patient’s ability to eat, chew, or talk. Most patients experience a resolution of most, if not all, of their symptoms within a week or two after the injections. This procedure is effective for 4-6 months. This five-minute procedure can prevent unwanted teeth clenching, allow for better sleep quality, prevent further damage to their teeth, stop headaches and pain, and improve the patient’s quality of life.
