A forehead and brow lift are different names for the same facial procedure. A forehead lift elevates a saggy brow line and eliminates frown lines between the eyes. Dr. Kulbersh performs brow lifts for cosmetic and functional reasons.

If drooping eyebrows limit your ability to open your eyes, then a brow lift in coordination with an upper eyelid lift may be performed to restore the line of sight. In these cases, the patient undergoes a simple test by an ophthalmologist to document the effects of the heavy eyebrow on vision. Insurance often covers brow lifts performed for functional reasons.

Eyebrows are essential for expression, conveying many feelings with their subtle movement and changes in position. As we age, eyebrows start to droop, and deep creases begin to develop between and above the brows. These lines can make you look angry, frustrated, or worried, even when you don’t feel that way. Droopy eyebrows can make eyes appear darkened or deep-set, which can hide your natural beauty.

Charlotte facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Kulbersh can help you restore a natural and refreshed appearance to the eyebrows through forehead and brow lift surgery.

You might be a good candidate for brow lift surgery if you are concerned about a low, heavy brow or furrowed lines above the nose. A brow lift can reverse these issues to achieve a more alert and refreshed look. To be considered for a brow lift in Charlotte, patients must be in good health and medically cleared for surgery.

Patients often want a brow lift because they feel that their sagging brows portray a facial expression of anger or depression. A gloomy facial appearance may cause people to respond and interact with you differently, affecting mood and self-confidence. A brow lift helps patients convey their emotions more accurately, mentally enhances self-confidence and sharpens the natural beauty of the eye.

Dr. Kulbersh was trained in Beverly Hills with two renowned oculoplastic (eye plastic surgery) surgeons. The advanced techniques employed in Beverly Hills are now available for Dr. Kulbersh’s patients in the Carolinas. There are many procedures to raise the brow and Dr. Kulbersh employs at least four different techniques depending on the patient’s goals, including:

With his ability to customize the technique to the precise needs and goals of his patients, Dr. Kulbersh achieves the most natural, beautiful results for his patients. Regardless of the technique used, most patients are pleased with the results and their eyebrow shapes. An eyebrow lift is one of the best options for rejuvenating the face and illuminate the eyes.

The one-centimeter incision brow lift is the most minimally invasive type of brow lift with the most comfortable recovery. Dr. Kulbersh performs this technique under local anesthesia in the office. It is an excellent option for a patient that cannot take the time to recover from a more invasive brow procedure.

Dr. Kulbersh makes the one-centimeter incision in the upper eyebrow hairs to minimize visual scarring afterward. He uses a special suture to lift the skin, muscle, and fat to elevate and stabilize the brow. The incision is closed meticulously, so the scar is nearly invisible.

The recovery for this technique is just one day of rest and requires cleaning of the incision with warm soapy water after 24 hours. Dr. Kulbersh removes the incisions in 5-7 days.

This brow lift is an appropriate option for men and women, as the results are subtle and look very natural. It is best for a slight elevation of the brow on the lateral side of the face (the side closer to the temples). Dr. Kulbersh designed this procedure with his mentor, Dr. Guy Massry, an oculoplastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Dr. Kulbersh is the only surgeon in the area performing this minimally invasive brow lifting.

For patients that require lifting of the entire brow, an endoscopic browlift is typically the surgery of choice. The endoscopic brow lift has been perfected over the past 15 years. A few small incisions are placed in the hairline, to elevate the forehead skin and eyebrows with this technique.

After surgery, a small drain is left in place for 1-2 days and a dressing is applied to the forehead. The sutures or staples placed in the hairline are removed after 5-7 days. The procedure may produce a subtle elevation of the hairline.

In rare instances, Dr. Kulbersh will perform a direct brow lift, which entails removing the tissues just above the brow to raise it. This is only done in cases where the brow has fallen so much that it has inhibited vision in the eye. The direct brow lift is rarely done solely for cosmetic reasons. It is best performed in older males with deep creases in the forehead where the incision can be hidden. In Dr. Kulbersh’s hands, this procedure is used to help improve vision in the eye.

The coronal brow lift is the most invasive method of raising the brow. It has been used longer than any of the other techniques. A coronal brow lift requires an incision across the entire scalp from ear to ear, either in the hairline or just in front of the hairline. The incision is made within the hairline if the elevated hairline will be an acceptable result. If the hairline cannot be raised because of a large forehead, the incision can be made just in front of the hairline. A strip of tissue is removed across the entire length of the incision to elevate the brow.  All incisions are meticulously closed to reduce the visibility of a scar.

Patients will typically require 7-10 days of downtime and may have a drain in place for 1-2 days. Dr. Kulbersh rarely recommends this type of brow lift unless the patient requires substantial correction to achieve a positive result.

Frequently asked questions

You will experience swelling and bruising for about 10 days following your surgery. You should keep your head elevated and use a cold compress to reduce the swelling for 1-2 weeks after surgery. You can return to work or your daily activities once your bandages have been removed, typically 1-3 days after the brow lift.

Dr. Kulbersh is exceptionally skilled in forehead lift surgery and can make incisions in areas that will prevent a scar from being visible. In most cases, scars from brow lift surgery are well hidden and unnoticeable.

Generally, patients see the final results of their browlift after about one month. Results are gradual because it takes time for the body to heal and for all of the swelling to subside.

Yes. A brow lift is often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift, necklift, awake mini-lift, and eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) for full facial rejuvenation. Sometimes patients who believe they need upper-eyelid surgery for drooping eyelids find that a forehead lift better meets their surgical goals.

There is no difference. These are just two different terms for the same surgery, and may be used interchangeably.

Insurance will not cover the cost of a brow lift or forehead lift if it is performed purely for cosmetic reasons. However, if the surgery was necessary to improve a sagging forehead or eyebrow drooping that interferes with your vision, your insurance might cover part or all of the cost of a forehead lift. It is the patient’s responsibility to check with their insurance carrier for information about the degree of coverage.

Asymmetric brows have multiple causes including differences in muscle tone and the eye socket. In brows that are asymmetric due to differences in muscle tone, Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin may improve symmetry. In patients that have differences in the eye sockets, surgical procedures can improve asymmetric brows. Patients seeking absolute symmetry of the brows should be forewarned that it is difficult to achieve, but if they are looking for a significant improvement there are reliable options.
