4 Ways To Ensure Proper Healing After Cosmetic Surgery

There are several reasons why someone may undergo cosmetic surgery—perhaps they’ve been thinking about improving  their appearance for quite some time, or maybe they’re just looking to maintain their look. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, NC, I believe one of the most important parts of facial plastic surgery is making sure that my patients know the best ways to keep their skin looking great and ensure the best healing in the weeks and months after their procedure. In this blog, I share some of my tips for making sure your skin stays healthy, natural, and youthful.

1. Minimize Sun Exposure

If you’ve undergone aprocedure like a facelift or rhinoplasty, it’s very important to be aware of the amount of time your spending outside in the first few months. Though this time should be limited, if you do need to spend time outdoors it’s crucial to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30. This helps ensure that the suns harmful rays will not do damage to the skin or discolor the incisions. To learn more about sun protection, visit cdc.gov

2. Use Mild Products

In the weeks following your facial plastic surgery, it’s a great idea to baby your skin and only use products that are hypoallergenic and fragrance free. This helps to make sure you’re skin won’t become irritated and will reduce the amount of redness that you might be experiencing post-procedure.   At my office, we have a line of image skin care products that are specifically designed to be used after surgery.  We also carry a line of mineral makeup that is both safe and healing to skin after surgery while covering up any bruising that may be present.

3. It’s All About H20

No matter what type of procedure you’ve had, surgical or non-invasive, it’s recommended to drink plenty of water. Water helps to cleans the skin from the inside out by flushing toxins that could be in in your system.

4. Be Patient

It’s very important to remember that everyone heals differently and experiences results at different times. No matter how much you’re tempted to pick at any scabs or peeling skin, don’t!  Doing so could cause additional scabbing and even potential scarring. Being patient during the recovery process is necessary to ensure you see the best results possible, and allowing your skin to heal naturally is sure to provide you with just that.
