Differences Between Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

If you’ve ever looked into getting a rhinoplasty, you may have run across the terms ‘open’ and ‘closed’. These terms refer to the location of the incision made for the procedure. We perform both techniques at Carolina Facial Plastics in Charlotte, NC. It is important to understand the differences between the two techniques as well as their indications when considering undergoing a rhinoplasty.

What is Open Rhinoplasty?before and after results from rhinoplasty surgery in Charlotte, NC

An open rhinoplasty is a rhinoplasty procedure in which the incision is made along the columella, also known as the skin at the base of your nose between the two nostrils.

After the incision is made, the patient’s skin is peeled off of the front of the nose to allow clear visibility of the underlying nasal structures.

Dr. Kulbersh most commonly uses the open rhinoplasty technique when a patient desires tip work, larger changes in the profile, or opening of narrowed nasal valves.

Opening the nasal valves can significantly improve nasal breathing. Although the incision is made on the outside of the nose, its location at the base of the columella allows it to heal inconspicuously and is hardly noticeable.

What is Closed Rhinoplasty?

Alternatively, a closed or endonasal rhinoplasty in Charlotte is performed through an incision inside the nose. Patients often like the idea of having no visible scar and a closed rhinoplasty typically results in a faster healing time with less swelling.

Because the procedure is performed through a small incision inside the nose, visibility is less than in an open procedure, therefore it is generally used when minor changes are being made.

While a closed rhinoplasty may bring less visibility, Dr. Kulbersh is experienced in both the open and closed procedures and likes to perform closed rhinoplasty whenever possible to reduce the scarring and healing time for my patients.
