Dysport is an injection that helps smooth wrinkles on the face through relaxing certain muscles. It works similarly to that of Botox, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. If you are starting to notice wrinkles at rest on your forehead, between your eyebrows, or at the corners of your eyes, Dysport may be able to help reduce those wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance.
How does Dysport work?
Dysport works by relaxing the overactive muscles of the face, in order to prevent the repetitive movements that lead to the development of wrinkles. By blocking overactivity of facial muscles, wrinkles are not only prevented from developing, but existing wrinkles have a chance to improve and the skin to smooth out. Muscle contraction leads to wrinkles, which is why we tend to develop more wrinkles in areas of our face that we move a lot, such as the forehead.
What Can Dysport Do?
Get rid of facial wrinkles
The most common uses for Dysport include treating wrinkles and fine lines on the face. These specific areas include:
- Forehead wrinkles – Dysport can help smooth away horizontal lines on the forehead
- Glabella wrinkles – Often referred to as “frown lines” or “11’s”, Dysport can help smooth away vertical lines between the eyebrows.
- Crow’s feet – “Smile lines” or the wrinkles surrounding the eyes that tend to appear when smiling, can benefit from Dysport treatment. Dysport is also able to give a subtle ‘brow lift’ to open the eyes and lift the lateral brow.
Treat hyperhidrosis (aka “excessive sweating”)
Dysport can also be used effectively to treat hyperhidrosis, otherwise known as excessive sweating. Dysport can be a good option to help stop excessive sweating by blocking the nerve signals that tell the sweat glands to produce sweat. This condition affects many people and can cause embarrassment, anxiety, and self-consciousness. In certain cases, hyperhidrosis can be socially and even functionally debilitating.
Slim the jaw and relieve TMJ symptoms
Dysport can be injected into the masseter muscles in the jaw for a slimming effect to soften and feminize a square jaw. If a widened jawline is caused by teeth grinding, or a diagnosis of bruxism, Dysport injections can relieve the jaw pain and soreness that can result from clenching and muscle tightness.
Relieve migraines and headaches
Dysport can be an effective treatment for migraines and headaches. Although it’s not totally understood why Botox and Dysport work for migraines, it is believed that they block the pain signals being sent to the brain and that they relax the muscles in the head to reduce sensitivity to pain. Dysport can be injected into the forehead, temples, and scalp as a potential treatment for migraines and headaches.
Smooth your neck and chest
Horizontal wrinkles or ‘rings’ on the neck can be temporarily erased with a simple Dysport treatment. Tiny amounts of Dysport are injected into the muscles above and below the horizontal lines, resulting in a smoothened look of the neck as the muscles relax. This treatment can also be used similarly on the chest or ‘decollate’ to smooth the texture of the skin.
In addition, the contour of the neck may be improved with a Dysport treatment. The platysma muscles are those vertical bands that run down your neck, more visible when clinching the jaw. These bands are able to be softened with Dysport to smooth the neck and give a more youthful appearance to the area.
How long does Dysport last?
Dysport can last for anywhere from 3 to 4 months, depending on the individual patient as well as factors such as where it was injected. It is important to only have Dysport injections done by a skilled injector as most patients want to trust their face to an expert. The injectors at Carolina Facial Plastics tailor their treatments to each individual to ensure natural-looking results that their patients are satisfied with.
What is the difference between Dysport and Botox?
For most patients, there is very little difference between Dysport and Botox. Both products are forms of Botulinum toxin type A, which are used is to relax muscles and decrease movement. For most patients, the treatment experience and outcome should be very similar. Some patients may find that one product works better for them than the other; however, both products typically last between 3-4 months. One difference between the products is that Dysport may have a slightly quicker onset when compared to Botox; onset of 2-3 days with Dysport vs. 5-10 days onset with Botox. Some practitioners explain that choosing Botox vs. Dysport is like choosing between Coke vs. Pepsi; both products are very similar but there may be a personal preference towards one.
What is the Dysport Aftercare?
There is no downtime and very little aftercare required after Dysport treatments. We recommend avoid exercise or physical activity for 4 hours post-injections, and also to avoid rubbing or laying on the face for 4 hours post-injection.
