Tips for a Male Rhinoplasty

We have seen an increasing trend of male patients undergoing rhinoplasty.  While there are some basic fundamentals for all rhinoplasty patients, there are some unique considerations that males should consider when thinking about undergoing rhinoplasty surgery.  As a rhinoplasty expert in Charlotte, we will discuss a few thoughts that males should consider during their rhinoplasty consultation.

Tip 1- Define Your Goals

When a male decides to explore the possibility of undergoing rhinoplasty surgery, they should identify their goals.  Typically, males will undergo rhinoplasty to:

  • Improve breathing
  • Improve the appearance of the nose
  • Improve breathing and the appearance of the nose

Some men are not concerned about their appearance; therefore they are not interested in rhinoplasty to change the appearance of their nose.  These patients typically are:

  1. Men that are athletic with nasal obstruction that might result in limitations of exercise
  2. Men that have had trauma to their nose that resulted in nasal obstruction

In regards to the aesthetics of the nose, male patients should do their best to identify which features of their nose they find attractive and which features they would like to improve.  If patients are able to articulate their concerns to me, it will help me guide them to the best possible result.

Tip 2- Male Rhinoplasty Should Be Conservative

We believe in being more conservative in the aesthetic changes of a male nose when compared to a female nose.  The goal of a male rhinoplasty is to create an improved version of the nose while not radically changing the character of the nose.  For these reasons, we typically recommend that males choose to undergo more conservative changes to the nose.  It is of upmost importance that the results of a male rhinoplasty are natural and masculine.

Tip 3- The Results of a Male Rhinoplasty Should Create a Masculine Nose

There are certain features that can create a masculine or feminine nose.  The rhinoplasty surgeon must take the necessary steps to ensure the nose remains masculine and fits the male face.  For example:

  • The nasal bridge – A masculine nasal bridge will have a slight hump or bump to it. A perfectly straight bridge can look unnatural and a “scoop” nose can be feminizing
  • The angle the nose meets the upper lip – This angle should be around 90 to 95 degrees in a male. Any larger of an angle can create a nose that appears feminine and an angle that is smaller will look like a droopy tip

During a rhinoplasty consultation, we perform imaging morphing on the nose.  Imaging morphing is a computer program where we can change the appearance of the nose on the computer screen to show the patient the ideal outcome during surgery.  Imaging morphing is a great way to communicate and can create the ideal result for the patient.

Tip 4- Plan for a Surgery Date in Advance

There are many steps that must be completed before a patient can undergo rhinoplasty.  For this reason, we would suggest that patients have a consult at least 1 month before they would like to undergo surgery.  The farther out in advance they schedule their surgery; the higher likelihood the patient will get their first choice of surgery dates.  Patients should consider that they will need to take 1 to 2 weeks off from work.  For this reason, times around holidays and school breaks are very popular times for patients to undergo surgery.  If a patient is interested in having surgery during these popular times, we would recommend having the consultation about 3 months before their anticipated surgery date.

Tip 5- Choose a Surgeon with Experience in Male Rhinoplasty

The take home message from this blog is that there are nuances to create a masculine nose that fits a male face.  A surgeon must apply the different principles for both males and females when performing a rhinoplasty to create the best result.
