What is Blepharoplasty?

Have you noticed your upper eyelids starting to droop as you age? Do you struggle with excess fat pockets under the eyes making you look tired? Is skin laxity around the eyes actually starting to impair your vision? Fortunately, there is a solution to these issues. In a procedure known as a blepharoplasty, or eye lift, I can correct these common issues and restore a youthful appearance to your eyes. As a facial plastic surgeon in Charlotte, I perform blepharoplasty on patients with careful consideration to maintaining a natural looking appearance.

Reasons for Blepharoplasty

There are a number of reasons that a person may seek a blepharoplasty, or eye lift.  Performed on the upper and/or lower eyelid, a blepharoplasty can widen the appearance of the eyes, improve droopy eyelids, and reduce excess fat from the under eye. These common signs of aging often make us look tired or sad and can have a drastic effect on our overall appearance. After a blepharoplasty, patients look younger and well rested.

For some, droopy eyelids can actually impair vision, making the blepharoplasty a necessary procedure.  When vision is impaired, the blepharoplasty procedure is often covered by insurance.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

When choosing a surgeon for blepharoplasty in Charlotte, it is important to choose someone with extensive experience performing facial plastic surgery. It is important that a surgeon performing blepharoplasty strives for natural-looking results that enhance, rather than drastically alter, your appearance. Usually looking for brighter eyes, blepharoplasty patients can rest assured that I will give them eyes that look natural and bring balance to the face.

The blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed on healthy individuals who wish to improve the appearance of the eyelids (upper, lower, or both). The recovery process is relatively easy. I generally advise patients to rest for the first 24 hours after the procedure, and keep the head elevated. An ice pack, such as frozen peas, should be applied to the eyes every hour for the first 2 days to minimize discomfort and swelling. I will remove the stitches within 5-7 days of surgery and you can return to normal daily activities about 2 weeks following the procedure.
