A recent article noted that the number of patients undergoing chin implants is steadily increasing. This trend is expected to continue as a physician recently confirmed that classic beauty Marilyn Monroe had a chin implant. As a Charlotte facial plastic surgeon, I have seen an increase in male and female patients undergoing chin augmentation.
What is Chin Augmentation?
A chin augmentation is a procedure to enlarge a receded or weak chin to improve facial harmony. Most often, patients with a small chin seek a chin augmentation to:
-
Create a stronger jawline
-
Balance out other facial features
-
Improve appearance of sagging jowls/neck
One interesting note:
The nose and chin have an intimate relationship. A small chin can create an appearance of a large nose. There are times when patients are at my office for a consultation for a rhinoplasty or nose job. After I explain and demonstrate the relationship of the chin to the nose, there are times when the patient is better served to undergo a chin implant than a rhinoplasty. As a Beverly Hills trained facial plastic surgeon, I have developed an eye for facial harmony and emphasize a balanced, natural looking result.
Types of Chin Augmentation
Here at Carolina Facial Plastics, I offer two types of chin augmentation procedures. The first is the chin implant, like the procedure Marilyn Monroe had, in which a silicone implant is used to create the patient’s desired jawline. I make the incision for the implant underneath the chin so that the resulting scar is hidden. The implant can be placed in the office in about 1 hour while the patient is awake. A chin implant can greatly improve the appearance of a recessed and/or small chin.
Another popular option for chin augmentation is the non-surgical chin augmentation. For patients who are not candidates for a surgical chin implant, I can use dermal fillers such as Perlane, Restylane, Radiesse, and Sculptra to create the appearance of a larger chin and give the patient their desired jawline without surgery. Oftentimes, dermal filler injections to several areas of the face, like the cheeks, temples, and nose, can enhance the results of a non-surgical chin augmentation and offer complete facial rejuvenation.
