The skin on our lips is very thin and constantly exposed to the elements. As a result, our lips age very quickly. The key to keeping your lips looking young is prevention. Today I have a few tips for preventing lip lines, as well as treating them once they occur.
Exfoliate Your Lips
Just as we exfoliate the rest of our skin to keep it looking fresh and young, we must do the same with our lips. Simply take a soft bristled toothbrush, get it wet, and gently rub it over your lips 1-2 times a week. This easy trick will get rid of dead skin cells that have built up and keep the gentle skin of your lips looking youthful.
Moisturize Your Lips
Keep your lips moisturized to prevent the damage caused by overly dry skin by using a lip moisturizer with hyaluronic acid. Your body naturally produces hyaluronic acid to keep skin firm, but it decreases with age causing wrinkles and sagging. By choosing a lip balm with hyaluronic acid added, not only will you keep your lips from becoming too dry and cracked, you will restore a plumped look.
Protect Your Lips
Perhaps the most important tip I could give you to prevent aging of your lips is to protect them from the damaging effects of the sun. Regularly apply a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher to keep the delicate skin of your lips from getting too much UV exposure. UV damage is one of the leading causes of wrinkles and since our lips are constantly exposed, SPF protection is crucial in preventing lip lines.
Treat Your Lips
If you are already noticing lip lines, or are struggling with lipstick bleed, I may have a treatment option to help reduce the appearance of lines. Non-surgical procedures such as injectable facial fillers and lip augmentation are great options for diminishing the appearance of superficial and deep lip lines around the mouth and restoring a youthful, plump appearance to the lips. During your consultation, we can discuss your concerns and decide on a treatment that is right for you.
