Who Can Benefit from Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Dr. Jonathan Kulbersh, a Beverly Hills-trained facial plastic surgeon, specializes in all procedures of the face, but specifically specializes in rhinoplasty surgery which is also commonly referred to as a nose job.  His practice, Carolina Facial Plastics, is located in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina and dedicates their time consulting with new and existing patients about surgical and non-surgical treatments of the nose.

When one is considering surgery, such as rhinoplasty, it is most important that the patient feels comfortable in their decision to undergo elective surgery and feels comfortable with their surgeon of choice and office staff.  Patients commonly ask Dr. Kulbersh and his staff if they believe they can benefit from a nose job. Ultimately, the decision is the patient’s. The patient has to decide whether they feel confident about an elective procedure and whether they are physically and emotionally ready to undergo rhinoplasty surgery.

To undergo surgery, a patient must be in good health.  Before undergoing surgery, Dr. Kulbersh will have patients undergo pre-operative clearance.  This entails an evaluation by a primary care doctor to ensure the patient is in good health.  Dr. Kulbersh will have his patients undergo basic blood tests to ensure the patient’s electrolytes and blood clotting abilities are normal.

Reasons for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Patients undergo a cosmetic nose job to change the appearance of their nose.  Most commonly patients are unhappy with their nose due to a bump, a bulbous tip, a crooked bridge or they do not feel their nose is in harmony with the rest of their face. It is also very common that some patients have functional issues with their nose which cause nasal obstruction which can effect breathing. In this case, Dr. Kulbersh will evaluate the cause of the nasal obstruction.  It could be due to a narrowing inside the nose or a medical condition such as chronic allergies.  After identification of the possible causes of nasal obstruction, Dr. Kulbersh will recommend additional treatments that may be surgical or medical.  Surgical treatments of nasal obstruction include septoplasty, turbinate reduction, or internal nasal valve reconstruction.  Medical treatments include antihistamines, nasal sprays, or allergy shots.

Understanding the Benefits and Risks of Rhinoplasty

Some important factors which might discourage Dr. Kulbersh from operating on a patient seeking a rhinoplasty are emotional and mental stability and one’s age.  Patients must clearly understand the risks and benefits before undergoing a rhinoplasty. Dr. Kulbersh explains all of the risks and benefits during the initial consultation and again at ones pre-operative appointment before surgery. Patients must be emotionally mature to undergo the possible side effects that nasal surgery might have.  It is also important to note that females must have had their menstrual period before undergoing rhinoplasty and must be physically and emotionally mature as well as male patients.  Typically this age is 15 for females and 16 for males.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Options

If one is not a candidate for nose job surgery, they might be a candidate for a non-surgical rhinoplasty.  This is a relatively quick, 45-minute, affordable procedure done in the office while the patient is awake.  During a non-surgical rhinoplasty, Dr. Kulbersh injects dermal fillers, typically Restylane, in the nose.  The Restylane will last about one year, and the patient will then return for a repeat injection.  Patients are typically a candidate for a non-surgical nose job if they have a divot in their nose or feel that their nose is too flat.

Schedule a Consultation with Dr. Kulbersh Today

The best way for one to know whether or not they will benefit from a rhinoplasty is to consult with Dr. Kulbersh in his office in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Carolina Facial Plastics offers consultations for those seeking nasal surgery.  At the consult, Dr. Kulbersh will do imaging morphing which is where he takes photos of one’s nose and uses computer software to show what the ideal appearance would look like after a nose job.  This is a great way for our patients to communicate their goals and to be able to visualize a result from surgery.  He will also go over the procedure in detail, discuss recovery time and benefits and risks associated.  Dr. Kulbersh’s staff will also meet with the patient to discuss cost and scheduling.
